Do You Ever Feel Like A Firework... Full of Heavy Metals? 

The morning after a large celebration with fireworks in the sky, there is a lingering haze of particulates circulating the troposphere- the lower layer of the atmosphere that we breathe. Although the colorful spectacle only lasts 30-60 minutes, the chemicals released during the combustion will remain until the ecosystem regenerates itself. The following is a comprehensive list of the particles that linger in the sky after 4th of July in the United States: 

The Metals Behind the Colors

Common fireworks colors come from metal salts:

  • Strontium compounds → red
  • Barium compounds → green
  • Copper compounds → blue
  • Sodium compounds → yellow/gold
  • Calcium compounds → orange
  • Magnesium and aluminum → bright white flashes

  • Trace amounts of lead, chromium, and other metallic residues may be present depending on the formulation of the pyrotechnics. 

The Explosive Reaction 

Oxidizers and combustion products

  • Perchlorates (used as oxidizers in many pyrotechnic compositions)
  • Potassium compounds
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • Sulfur-containing gases
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂)

  • These are the chemicals that act as a fuel to propel the firework into the sky and create a combustion reaction, thus leaving residue that lingers after the firework display.

The Lingering Odors

Organic chemicals

Recent research shows fireworks can release:

  • Amines
  • Phenols
  • Sulfur-containing organic compounds
  • Other volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs)- combustion products that contribute to haze and odor.

The Finest Particulate 

PM2.5—fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller.

These microscopic particles are the most concerning of all.
Quick to enter the bloodstream and penetrate the lungs due to their small size. 

The Grand Finale 

If you can smell it, you're breathing it. 

As the sun sets on the 4th of July, we sit in traffic for an hour, search for parking for a half hour (unless you're in Miami, where parking may take even longer), and navigate through large crowds in pursuit of the perfect viewing spot. Then comes the anticipation the collective pause before the first shell is launched into the night. 

This spectrum of emotions culminates in a celebration that lasts for about 30-60 mins- an event that ends quicker than the time it took to get there. Although the firework display comes and goes faster than you can get comfortable in your seat, the aftermath of the explosive event sends shockwaves through the atmosphere. 

The fascinating colors fade in seconds, the crowd disperses in minutes, but the smoke, metals, and fine particulates leave a chemical footprint on the earth that will be questioned by future generations. I could almost hear future generations looking back at us and saying "our barbaric ancestors, on the brink of global environmental collapse, persisted on launching heavy metals and combustion products into the sky then complained about polluted air and lack of natural resources" -the kids of the future. 

Perhaps that is the irony of fireworks and human nature. We devote enormous effort, energy, and resources to create a brief moment of entertainment that most will experience behind a screen. In a way, fireworks have become a symbol of our epoch: extracting resources, transforming them into a spectacle, and leaving behind a deep wound on the Earth for a moment that is destined to disappear. The explosion is temporary, but the footprint is not.
